Bonfire Night

This year we celebrated Bonfire Night at Granny and Grandad's house. This meant that, for the first time, we got to make our own effigy of Guy Fawkes. I thought it'd be a great project to do with the kids but, in the end, I basically did the whole thing myself. And they wonder why we don't get a pet! Our Guy ended up looking a bit like Lord Farquaad from Shrek with his tiny, disproportionate body but I grew quite fond of the little fella. It almost seemed a shame to chuck him on the bonfire (even if he DOES look a bit menacing in this photo!).
It was a nice, mild night for the bonfire. Edward's parents had also invited their neighbors and Dakota's girlfriend, Charlotte.
Charley did a great job as our fire starter.
Guy started off looking dignified - almost defiant!
But he quickly deteriorated.
Eventually he succumbed to the flames altogether. We knew it was well and truly over when his head popped! Then all that remained was one creepy hand sticking out of the fire like something from a bad horror film.
The men fed the fire while the women socialized - all except poor Granny who was busy preparing a yummy autumnal feast for 15 people. Whoops, guess I should've been helping with that (worst daughter-in-law ever!). Sorry Granny.
After eating came the fireworks. It was great to see Edward and Grandad working together like a well oiled machine for our entertainment. We especially enjoyed Edward's comedy run as he retreated to a safe distance each time he lit a firework. That was meant to be a comedy run, right honey?

Bonfire Night is a fantastic holiday. We all had such a great time (except Guy, of course). I'm already looking forward to next year. Thanks again Granny and Grandad!

Am I the only one that thinks that was sort of a heavily wooded and branch covered area to hold a bon fire? :) (I'm sure it just looked deceiving in the picture...the Lanyons all strike me as an utterly safety-conscious bunch)

Yes indeed, I love Bonfire Night. I look forward to this post every year. Fire, Effigys, and a Feast, what more could you ask for in a celebration??
